舊圖 Old Library

Libraries are the soul of any university campus, and NCU has two buildings referred to as libraries. The tall white building over there is the main library, which provides all the functions of a regular library. And the other one is this building in front of us, what everyone refers to as the Old Library. It was originally the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Library, built in 1971 in memory of the most famous strong man in our history. In fact, in this empty lost used to stand a statue of Chiang Kai-Shek. The lot is now empty because the statue was removed during the period of political transition of power.

And as the university got bigger, more and more departments were established, and more and more books were bought to enrich the library. Pretty soon, the old library became too small for such a big university, so the university began to build a new library. And the old library was transformed into a multi-function building. It has an Art Gallery where exhibitions of paintings, carvings and calligraphy are held here every month. On the second floor is an Audio-visual Center with a huge collection of films on the second floor. As NCU is quite distant from town with little entertainment or recreation, the Audio-visual center functions as a campus “blockbuster’s,” where you can check out video films for your own pleasure. In addition, the center offers private viewing rooms and very comfortable sofas for group viewing. You can reserve the special audio room on line. So I guess an old library can have a second life after all.
